The birth of the Romanian people

It is well-known that, although Dacia was a Roman province only for  165 years (106-271), the process of romanisation was very powerful. It had already started, in fact, before the conquest proper, due to the conquest of some neighbouring areas ( Western Pannonia and Southern and Eastern Moesia )  and the turning of the Danube into a Roman river. (The Roman merchants had penetrated the north of the Danube long before the Roman military conquest.)

The factors contributing to the Romanisation were:

  • a massive colonosation with people from all the Roman provinces;
  • the army, a visible factor of the imperial presence through the network of military forts  (castre) and its ex-soldiers ( veterani- a word preserved  to this day, designating a person who took part in one or more wars);
  • the obvious process of urbanisation: in the first half of the 2nd century 44 cities, representing as many centres of production and barter, were mentioned in documents;
  • the agricultural farms, made by the colonists, but in which the Dacians were used for labour in the fields.
