The Roman Occupation of Britain.
The Roman presence in Britain began with Caesar’s invasion in 55 BC.
The motive for the invasion was to end the support that British tribes
had given to Gaulish tribes that shared the same Celtic background. Upon
arriving on the Britons’ soil, Caesar spoke these memorable words,
“Veni, Vidi, Vici”- “I came, I saw, I conquered”.

This map shows the limit of the Roman Occupation of Britain, or
“Britannia” as the Romans called it. Later Roman generals, such as Claudius, Hadrian, Antonine and Suetonius, would also have their impact on the British landscape. Caesar’s conquest.
Caesar was perhaps the greatest general that the Romans ever had. His
methods and ability to prepare detailed battle plans were one of his greatest
strengths. He also was able to alter his plans should the situation demand
it, giving his campaigns a greater chance of success than those of his
enemies.
Caesar began his conquest in the south east of the country, later spreading
out his attack into the interior.
The well trained legions under their brilliant commander were able to
fight off the local tribes that dared to oppose the Roman advance.

The whole country was not conquered all at once, but the first attack
of the Romans was devastating. They were here to stay.
