The Romans in France: Arles

The city has a Roman amphitheatre with a capacity of 26,000 people, a Roman obelisk found in the Rhône and set in the 'Place de la République', traces the Roman theatre. Some works of art, like the 'Statue de la Venus d'Arles'  can be seen in the museum of 'Le Louvre' in Paris.

During the 1st century A.C., the city appeared as a main trading centre of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476, Arles was conquered by Wisigoths, then by the Ostrogoths. In 1990, there were 52,593 inhabitants.
