The Romans as builders

A brief history

Although the Roman army was used mainly as a force to maintain the peace and conquer additional territory, it was also used to create some of the finest examples of architecture and engineering feats. As well as being a ruthless fighting force, the legions contained many skilled craftsmen who left behind many beautiful legacies. These took the form of the impressive transport network that stretched throughout the empire, aqueducts that transported water to the heavily populated towns and cities, and also many important public buildings.

Evidence of the influence of the Romans. Perhaps one of the greatest legacies of the Romans was their many architectural wonders. Their construction methods were so good that many of their buildings and structures have survived more than 1500 years and still look very beautiful. Many modern architects still try to follow the Roman Classical style as closely as possible, especially when designing buildings to meet the public need such as schools, libraries, universities and court houses.

The structure is still so sound that it is still capable of holding water. The Romans’ fondness of grand sweeping pillars and arches is clearly visible, as is their love of beautifully sculpted statues.
